Camping
Are you interested in Food forest ? Just attend one of our camps. There you will get first hand experience on food forest farming, meet experts, visit food forest farms and interact with farmers and taste the fruits. You will get hands on experience on designing a food forest, preparing compost, land preparation, planting, installing drip irrigation, etc. Be a camper!
Resource Assessment
How much do you know about your land ? Conduct an initial assessment about wind, water, sunlight, slop, soil, water holding capacity, weather, indigenous variety of plants, availability of biomass and existing vegetation of your land. Seek the help of nearby food forestrian!
Planning
Plan with details collected from ‘Resource assessment’. Decide planting time, area, irrigation method, plant selection, type of composting and time, etc
One output of good planning is a preliminary layout of your food forest. Be a food forest designer!
Composting
Though a nasty work but a must! It’s the compost for your future food forest. You will convert coir pith, cow dung, chicken poop, other animal waste, and tones of biomass into lively platform for your saplings, rich with microbes. Your compost will be ready within 60-75 days!
Land Preparation
Compost prepared ? about to ready ? it’s time to create pits for plants preserving slop and topsoil. This may include creating trenches for water harvesting.
Layout & Sapling selection
Let us start taking major decisions based on your initial resource assessment. Browse the lists of big/medium/small/temporary plants in our Database.
Decision 1: Based on canopy size of each plant, decide what is suitable for your land.
Decision 2: What type of fruit/leaves (size/color/taste/texture/season..) do you really like? More decisions are to follow. Be a decision maker! Our Data base will help you too.
Planting
The rains 🌧️🌧️⛈️🌧️ arrived! Your compost is ready! The layout is final! The saplings you selected are with you. Dig the pits as you designed. Mix the compost with the topsoil in each pit. It’s time to begin planting the saplings. Transform this day into a festival to enjoy with your family, friends, and nearby Food Forestrians!
Irrigation
Summer ahead ? plants become thirsty ? Facilitate minimum amount of water through apt irrigation method. Mostly drip irrigation. Work out the cost-benefit of drip irrigation, refer to our Database.
Nurturing and Harvesting
Let the plants speak to you! Haven’t they blossomed yet! Continuous nurturing of saplings is the key to it. What’s your plan to handle the abundance of harvest? See the cuisines and recipes of Food Forest Families! Let your friends also enjoy
Project evaluation
Don’t you want to determine your success – the relevance and level of achievement of your project objectives, development, effectiveness, efficiency, impact, and sustainability?
Evaluate the growth of plants, changes in soil, quality and level of water, temperature, visitors and well-being of surrounding personals. Be a critical judge! Be a ambassador of food forest!
